Welcome to the cypriot diaspora project

For many years the Cypriots have been migrating to the UK to start a new life. Once here they created businesses, schools and churches, making an important contribution to British society.
The aim of the Cypriot Diaspora Project is to record the many fascinating stories of these migrants that came to the UK before 1960.
We would like to know why, how and what they did when they first arrived here over 45 years ago.
This will be the first time that such a comprehensive collection of Cypriot stories, photographs and artifacts will be exhibited in the UK.
To help in this endeavour, the GPA is proud to announce that it has been awarded a grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund to set up the Cypriot Diaspora Project. George Georghiou, fundraiser for the GPA, will be the project manager of the CDP.
The many different aspects of the project are:

  • Firstly a series of video recorded interviews with elderly Cypriots.
  • These stories are published in a book and literature.
  • A photographic and artifact exhibition, which will tour the UK, beginning at the Bruce Castle Museum, London.
  • The GPA youth theatre will perform in the play ‘Migratory Birds’ based on these stories.
  • Finally, a Diaspora Education Pack will be distributed to all Greek community schools.

If you are Cypriot and arrived in the UK before 1960 and you would like to be involved in this project, we would like to hear from you.
